This kanye/beck mashup blew our minds out of our ears
The winks. The nudges. The layers and layers of winks and nudges and nudges and winks. Arcade Fire’s Win Butler has just released a mash-up of Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” and Beck’s “Loser” and not only is it kind of a jam, we also imagine that it’s laden with meaning.
For those without TVs — or a crippling addiction to pop culture news — Kanye ravaged the Internet last week when he told reporters that Beck should give his Album of the Year Grammy for Morning Phase to Beyoncé because “artistry” (or something). Apparently, a lot of Twitter users also didn’t know who Beck was, taking to the social network to voice their confusion.
We’re guessing we weren’t the only ones, at this juncture, to think back to Arcade Fire, who took home Album of the Year in 2011 for The Suburbs, the decidedly more alt act beating out Bey-level artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. People were similarly — and vocally —confused about the band’s identity. (Google is your friend, guys.)
Given the parallel situations here, it’s kind of fitting that Butler chose to make a kind of statement by bringing together Beck and ‘Ye’s jams to create “Jesus Walks, Loser” under his DJ name, Windows 98.
It’s also quite the complement to the recently released Bey/Beck mashup, “Single Loser (Put a Beck on It).” Although, you know dudes, Beck has more than one song. But I digress…
Take a listen to Butler’s effort below.
