The weeknd earned top honours at the 2015 mmvas
Toronto-native The Weeknd was in his hometown for this year’s Much Music Video Awards. Along with performing for thousands of screaming fans, the soulful singer was nominated for a whopping SIX AWARDS!
Let’s take a look at his night:
First Win: Best Director – ‘Often‘
The Weeknd took home the award for Best Director for the video of his song ‘Often.’ This one was awarded on the MMVA red carpet; is there any better way to start the night off right?
Second Win: Best Pop Video – ‘Earned It‘
He also took home the first award of the show for his ‘Earned It’ video. You know the one; it’s the racy masterpiece for his song off the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack. Burlesque, boobs, and The Weeknd: an award-winning combination.
Third Win: Most Buzzworthy Canadian
It’s only six months in, but 2015 has already been a busy year for this 25-year-old. ‘Earned It’ started things off when “Fifty Shades” hit in theatres. Just last month, he released a new video for ‘The Hills,’ the first single off his upcoming second album, “Chapter III.” Then earlier this month, we got the second single, ‘Can’t Feel My Face.’ The track officially dropped just moments after he finished performing it at Apple’s Worldwide Development Conference.
Performance: ‘The Hills‘ and ‘Earned It’
The Weeknd had fans screaming with the longest performance of the night. He started off with a fiery performance of ‘The Hills,’ then moved on to his hit single ‘Earned It.’
Fourth Win: Video of the Year – ‘Often’
At this point, we’re just wondering how he didn’t run out of people to thank for all these awards!
Congratulations to The Weeknd! With four wins against some tough competition, he managed to tie the record for most wins in one night, previously set by Swollen Members, k-os, and Hedley.
