In the world of writing a hit song, you’ve got to keep the artist in mind — after all, the singer is the one who will take it to the charts. There have been a lot of songs written for Rihanna and Britney, and while everyone wants to write for the pop legends, sometimes the tracks just need a better home. And we’re kind of glad they did.

“Since U Been Gone” proved that Kelly Clarkson really had the attitude and the chops to make it in the pop world, but it could’ve gone to Pink, who already had hits. Kelly takes it to a new level, and now, it’s hard to imagine anyone else singing it. Of course, you hear these stories all the time — a song is written for one person, but another person gets it. Here are just 14 instances where songs were intended for a different artist:

 

1. Iggy Azalea – “Pretty Girls” feat. Britney Spears

Little Mix wrote this song for their album, but they scrapped it, saying, “As we were writing the song we realized that it sounded more like it should be for somebody else rather than us.” So they gave it to Britney.

 

2. Kelly Clarkson – “Since U Been Gone”

Producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke had written this song for Pink, but she rejected it. It was also handed to Hilary Duff, but Clive Davis convinced them to give it to Kelly.

 

3. Jay Z and Kanye West – “N—as in Paris”

Pusha T passed on this Watch the Throne track because he was in “Demonic rap mode.” His manager has quoted him, saying, “’It sounds like a video game. Get that sh– out of here!’”

 

4. Rihanna – “Umbrella”

Reportedly, Britney Spears’ team passed on this track because she already had enough songs to record for her 2007 album, Blackout.

 

5. Charli XCX – “Boom Clap”

Charli said she wrote this song for Hilary Duff, saying, “We wrote it and then I was like, ‘Hey, I really think Hilary Duff is pretty cool and I heard she’s making a comeback album, so maybe we can give it to her.’ And we contacted her people and they were like, ‘This song isn’t cool enough for Hilary.’ I don’t think she ever heard it cause she put online, ‘This song is really cool. I wish I could’ve sung it.’ … I was like, ‘Damn, I’ll do it. Too bad Hilary.’”

 

6. Iggy Azalea – “Black Widow” feat. Rita Ora

Katy Perry had originally written this song for Prism but left it off. Azalea convinced her to let her finish the demo.

 

7. Britney Spears – “Passenger”

Katy Perry was also supposed to include this song she wrote with Sia on Prism, but instead, it went to Brit.

 

8. Meghan Trainor – “All About That Bass”

Meghan Trainor said she shopped this song around to other artists, includingBeyoncé, before she took it for herself. “Some artists get thousands of songs pitched and they never know, so Beyoncé herself probably never heard it.”

 

9. Kelly Clarkson – “Breakaway”

Avril Lavigne worked with songwriters on “Breakaway” for her 2002 debut,Let Go, but it reportedly didn’t fit. it was shopped around until it landed with Kelly.

 

10. Grimes – “Go”

Grimes said she intended for Rihanna to take “Go” from her and Blood Diamonds, but she ended up recording it herself so “its kinda different from regular grimes.”

 

11. Britney Spears – “…Baby One More Time”

Producer Max Martin intended for TLC to sing “…Baby One More Time.” They didn’t think that it fit.

 

12. Sia – “Chandelier”

“I usually think, ’Oh this would work for Rihanna, or this would be a good one for B or Katy,’” Sia told “On Air with Ryan Seacrest.” “But this time I was like, ’Uh oh I think I just wrote a full-blown pop song for myself by accident!’”

 

13. Miley Cyrus – “We Can’t Stop”

Producer Mike Will Made It wrote “We Can’t Stop” with Rihanna in mind, but she finished her album before it could get to her.

 

14. Kelly Clarkson – “Miss Independent”

Christina Aguilera intended for this track to go on her Stripped album, but Kelly ended up recording her version.
