If the phrase #FirstWorldProblem ever needed a definition, it might be choosing which DJ to see this New Year’s Eve. How do you jump on the decision of which act to see when all your EDM favourites are playing in your hometown?
Across the United States, most major cities are ringing in the new year with a plethora of EDM performances, with most offering quite the selection of powerhouse DJs as well as up-and-coming acts to choose from. New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and San Francisco are some of the lucky cities to feature EDM’s most elite this New Year’s Eve.
NYC alone will host Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, Dada Life, Moby, RJD2 and Pretty Lights. Miami will be greeted by Kaskade, Calvin Harris, Nervo and Alesso, with Tiësto and Steve Angello playing in the days leading up to the ball drop.
Detroit will see the collaboration of EDM and dubstep masterminds Skrillex; and Boys Noize’s “Dog Blood” for the first time. Los Angeles has a slew of DJs playing the White Wonderland Festival, and Chicago will probably hear Beatport’s current #1 collabo “Easy” when Porter Robinson and Mat Zo play the Congress Theater together. There may be nothing like Miami Music Week, but this roster sure does the EDM world justice.
With all these DJs scheduled to play, NYE 2012 symbolizes yet another successful year for electronic dance music. A genre that was barely known within U.S. borders a few years ago now sells out Madison Square Garden and has DJs winning Grammy Awards, Avicii touring with Madonna, and DeadMau5 DJing the VMAs. All accomplished within three short years, 2013 can only continue pushing this movement in a greater direction.
So hats off to 2012, as we say goodbye to a noteworthy year and look forward to what’s on the horizon in 2013 for this ever-evolving genre.
