It’s official—Shawn Mendes just won the 2018 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Canadian Act.
Mendes, who made waves when he released his self-titled third studio album in May and delivered two stand-out performances at the iHeartRadio MMVAs this past August, was announced as this year’s MTV EMA winner earlier today when the awards show was broadcast live from Spain. The 20-year-old also released a brand new Lost in Translation-inspired music video for “Lost in Japan” late last week, which recently hit 15 million views on YouTube.
The Pickering native is no stranger to the Best Canadian Act category, as he’s been nominated every year since 2015, winning for the first time last year, beating out fellow nominees Alessia Cara, Drake, Justin Bieber and The Weeknd. Mendes was nominated up against Cara, The Weeknd, and Drake again this year as well as indie rock darlings Arcade Fire.
The 2018 MTV EMA goes down tonight! Watch the MTV EMA on Sunday, November 4 at 7e/4p.
