Robert downey jr. Issues statement on son’s drug arrest

Actor Robert Downey, Jr.‘s son, 20-year-old Indio Downey, was reportedly arrested for drug possession Sunday (June 29) afternoon. The car the younger Downey was riding in was pulled over in West Hollywood, according to TMZ, when police allegedly saw Downey, in the passenger seat, smoking something out of a pipe. After a search, Downey was arrested for possession of cocaine.

The elder Downey famously did jail time for his own drug use and has spoken publicly about his own history of addiction. The father issued a heartbreaking statement of support for his son today.

“Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it,” he said in the statement. “Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being.”

“We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
