You may not know them by-name yet, but trust us, you’ve danced to their songs. MTV News recently got the chance to chat with DJ’s Armand Van Helden and Montreal-born A-Trak, also known together as Duck Sauce about their mythical beginnings as a group which lead to their infectious mega-single, ‘Barbara Streisand‘!
“One time while deep-sea fishing we were visited by an extra-terrestrial beluga [whale] and it told us we must make a group named Duck Sauce.” says Armand when asked how the band got together.
Well it’s a good thing that beluga whale did tell them to make a band because their ‘Barbara Streisand‘ single has 67 million views on YouTube, was covered on an episode of Glee, is featured in the Vitamin Water Revive commercial and hit #3 in the UK and reached #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Club Play Songs chart. Not bad for a song sampling the 1979 track “Gotta Go Home” by Boney M, which itself is based upon the original tune “Hallo Bimmelbahn” by the German band Nighttrain.
“I remember the [whale]” adds A-Trak. “It spoke with a British accent and said ‘My Day! You two should start a disco-house group, call it Duck Sauce. Toodle-loo!’ and then it went back in the water.”
Whatever you say, boys.
