The hook of indie pop artist Hayley Kiyoko’s new single is a simple but powerful one: “Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new.”
Those brazen words are at the epicenter of the 24-year-old actress and singer’s new video for “Girls Like Girls,” a vibrant track from her EP This Side of Paradise.
For the clip, Kiyoko recruited her “Insidious: Chapter 3” and “Jem and the Holograms” co-star Stefanie Scott, as well as “Teen Wolf” actress Kelsey Chow and model Hayden Thompson.
The heartbreaking video — which Kiyoko co-directed with Austin S. Winchell — introduces us to a trio of friends swimming, dancing, drinking; your standard summer pastimes. But looming over the gaiety is Coley’s (Scott) lustful glances at her sun-kissed friend Sonya (Chow), suggesting deeper-than-platonic feelings.
Things take an unexpected turn at the video’s intense climax, but ultimately this is a heartwarming and emotionally liberating song that carries a relatable pro-LGBT message. “Tell the neighbors I’m not sorry if I’m breaking walls down,” Kiyoko confidently sings against a glimmering pop beat.
Keep breaking those walls, girl — you’re clearly crushing it.
