When new MTV show “Faking It” premieres on April 22 at 10:30e/7:30p, Katie Stevens will play a high school student named Karma who’s torn over whether to correct a mistaken rumor that could help her achieve popularity, but in 2010, there was no confusing the actress’ single goal: to win “American Idol.” And you know what? After all was said and done, she came pretty damn close.
In late 2009, at age 16, Stevens took to auditions in Boston with a story that endeared audiences and a voice that wowed each of the judges — even the usually surly Simon Cowell. She was unanimously voted through to the next round, where she’d compete with the cream of the crop to secure a spot in the Top 24. And after a solid showing in Hollywood, she did precisely that.
As soon as voting was opened up to the public, Katie sailed through the first three rounds, covering hits from Corinne Bailey Rae and “Idol” OG Kelly Clarkson — and completely nailing them.
Ultimately, after singing “Baby, What You Want Me to Do” by Jimmy Reed, Stevens was eliminated, earning an eighth place finish. Her teary goodbye rendition of “Let It Be” by the Beatles didn’t leave a dry eye in the house, but her performances weren’t in vain. Over the past few years, Katie has been plugging away at a music career, and her YouTube channel still attracts hundreds of thousands of viewers.
There’s no doubt Katie’s undeniable stage presence will translate to the boob tube, so be sure to tune in for her “Faking It” debut this spring!
(P.S. Yes, she played Bougie Bell in Todrick Hall’s viral hit, “Beauty And The Beat.” You’re welcome.)
