Degrassi to say goodbye to mtv following season 14 finale (and we count down the most memorable characters)

After 14 incredible seasons of laughs, tears, and a whole lot of high school drama, ‘Degrassi‘ High will close its doors and end its MTV run with the season 14 finale.

Since the ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation’ series premiere in 2001, the show has been one of the most watched shows on CTV, Much, and MTV, with over a million weekly viewers, but did you know ‘Degrassi’ has been on since the 80s? Talk about Throwback Thursday!

This multi-award-winning piece of Canadian broadcast history taught us all how to survive high school, touching on everything from first dates, body image, and bullying to alcohol, drugs, and unplanned pregnancy. 369 episodes later, ‘Degrassi’ has probably covered every teen scenario EVER.

So what’s happening in this season? When Becky and Jonah propose a lunchtime talent showcase, Drew doesn’t like the idea and Becky wants to change his mind. Along with that, Winston becomes a stand up comic, and Zoe might face criminal charges.

Tune in to the final season on MTV, premiering on Monday, July 20 at 9e/6p. If you need to catch up, you can watch the first half of season 14 of, and relive seasons 12 and 13 on CraveTV.

In the meantime, we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite ‘Degrassi’ characters from seasons past.

Jimmy Brooks – Drake

Jimmy Brooks might be the MOST memorable cast member of all. Thanks to Drake’s success as a rapper following, fans have constantly been reminded of where he came from. Drake—then Aubrey Graham—played a Degrassi basketball star left paralyzed from the waist down after the infamous school shooting that took place in the fourth season.

Darcy Edwards – Shenae Grimes

Who doesn’t remember the captain of the Spirit Squad? Darcy Edwards was the ideal student up until she was drugged and assaulted at a party. The traumatic experience sent her down a dark path, but Brat Camp—yes, that’s a real thing—allowed her to cope and heal just before leaving to build schools in Kenya.

Clare Edwards – Aislinn Paul

Current ‘Degrassi’ character, Clare Edwards, has managed to build up a large following of devoted fans. She first appeared as Darcy Edward’s sister in season 6, making the current season her 9th one in total.

Eli Goldsworthy – Munro Chambers

On again, off again, boyfriend to Clare—and recently discovered baby daddy—Eli Goldsworthy was so popular among fans, he even got his own webisode series that ran throughout season 13. His popularity was undeniable, which could be the reason why show writers decided to bring him back for season 14.

Adam Torres– Jordan Todosey

Adam Torres is possibly one of the most influential Canadian television characters for teens to look up to. He was a female-to-male transgender teen that found friends and a safety at Degrassi that allowed him to be himself. Adam died in a tragic texting and driving accident in season 13.

Spinner Mason – Shane Kippel

Who could forget Jimmy’s BFF? Spinner was a slightly troubled student that battled ADHD. He was partly responsible for the incident that caused Jimmy to become paralyzed, but eventually made amends. He now manages the Dot and has made recent appearances on the current season and episodes of ‘After Degrassi’.
