Fairy tales never go out of style, as evidenced by the release of “Cinderella” and its massive box office success this weekend. The live-action take on Disney’s classic tale pulled in $23 million on Friday, and Variety reports it’s on track to make $70 million this weekend.
For reference, the movie is outpacing “Maleficent,” last year’s smash hit for Disney – the Angelina Jolie-led “Sleeping Beauty” reimagining made $69.4 million in its opening weekend. It’s an even bigger deal considering the fact that “Cinderella” isn’t led by a major star (though we’re pretty sure Lily James will be Hollywood royalty in a few years).
Variety also suggests the film’s popularity stems from the fact that it’s preceded by “Frozen” tie-in short film “Frozen Fever.” Not a bad one-two punch if you ask us, though we’re going to chalk all the “Cinderella” success up to its Prince Charming, the super-hot Richard Madden, who’ll always be Robb Stark in our hearts.
