For his next movie, director David O. Russell is bringing together the casts of his two previous movies, “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” for a trip back to the late 1970s and early 80s, complete with art scams and lots of bad hair.
Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence strut their stuff in the first trailer for “American Hustle,” a fictionalized retelling of Abscam, a famous FBI sting operation dealing with stolen property that brought down six members of Congress.
Bale and Cooper play two men at the heart of the scam, the former as a con man, who with his lover, played by Adams, works with the FBI agent played by Cooper.
In reteaming with her “Silver Linings Playbook” director, Lawrence looks like she will be getting another shot at a meaty role. Here, Lawrence is playing Rosalyn Rosenfeld, the wife of Christian Bale’s character, who was described in a recent USA Today article as a “loose cannon of a Long Island house wife… who threatens the entire operation.”
Russell has done extremely well by this cast in the past. He directed Christian Bale to a Best Supporting Actor win and Adams to a Supporting Actress nomination for “The Fighter,” and everyone knows about Lawrence’s Best Actress win this year for “Silver Linings Playbook.” It’s that Oscar caliber that already has people putting “American Hustle” in the early awards conversation.
We’ll find out if Russell and his cast can live up to their own Oscar-winning standards when “American Hustle” hits theaters in December. The film is expected to make some festival appearances before then, so keep an eye out for early reviews.
