Since Austin Powers last graced the screen in “Goldmember,” there has been talk of continuing the series — or, at the very least, making a spin-off film focusing on the superspy’s arch-nemesis and long-lost brother, Doctor Evil.
While talk continued of a sequel over the years, there was nothing to show for a potential “Austin Powers 4.” Myers started working largely in animated films, and director Jay Roach, surprisingly, made a convincing shift to directing political dramas for HBO.
But Roach has now returned to the realm of comedy — although he is keeping it political. The director spoke with MTV News while promoting “The Campaign,” starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, and he said that another “Austin Powers” movie is possible, but we may have to wait.
The director told MTV News that while he speaks with Myers often, a new film will ultimately come down to timing. Roach and Myers have been trying to get their next move right for about a decade.
“I talk to Mike all the time. We’re friends. He gave me the break of a lifetime, doing ‘Austin 1,’ ” Roach said. “For 10 years, we’ve tried to figure out what the right story would be.”
One of the most popular theories about a new film is a potential spin-off for the not-so-evil villain of the series, Doctor Evil. Roach likes that idea but wants to make sure everything is right before going down that road.
“We’ve always talked about how great it would be to have a Doctor Evil spin-off,” he said. “It has always been kind of a: when it’s exactly right, that’s when it will take off.”
