On Friday, I went to Mitch from Born Ruffians house, where he and Luke were eagerly awaiting to shoot the first “In the Kitchen with…”. Waiting for me and the crew was some homemade dip that Mitch made, with veggies and chips. What a sweet host. “In the Kitchen with…” is a new segment that I created where I visit the kitchens of some of my favourite local bands and cook their favourite meal together.
The boys were so much fun as we tackled a strip loin steak sandwich recipe. Here’s some pictures from the shoot. For more, check out my Fickr.
Afterwards, Luke performed a song off their new album “Say It” called Oh Man. The album’s out June 1st and it’s damn good. Like really damn good.

Look out for more “In the Kitchen with…”! Great bands, good food, and sweet tunes. Why didn’t I start this earlier?!

“In the Kitchen with… Born Ruffians” airs Tuesday March 16th.

Glasgow. Home of Jesus and Mary Chain, Mogwai, Belle and Sebastien, Franz Ferdinand, the varied list goes on. On this leg of the trip, I caught up with my buddies from Glasvegas who took time away from recording their sophomore album to show me around.

While I was in New York to pick up the travel journalism award, I spent some time with my friend Benni who just started a rad company called Fleck PR. Along with her partner, Jo, they’ve already built a solid artist roster which they were more than excited to show off to me. Their bands are raw and gritty, bursting with energy, and I have a feeling y’all will dig them as much as I do.
Here’s 5 that you should definitely keep an eye out for:
1. Gringo Star
Gringo Star spent last year touring with incredible acts such as ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and fellow garage-rock Atlantans the Black Lips, as well as performing at Lollapalooza. As they returned home from a crazy 2009 in December, the band were approached by fashion giant Tommy Hilfiger to use their fun and undeniably catchy ‘All Yall’ in a fragrance commercial for the holiday season. A well-deserved way to end a busy year. They hit the road again this Spring, with a stop at SXSW, and Europe to follow.
2. Ferocious Few

San Francisco’s Ferocious Few consists of duo, Francisco Fernandez: a half crazed and vicious human being, raised by the carnival-esque cast of a moving theatre company, and Daniel Aguilar: a sensitive soul who disguised this aspect of himself by playing drums as if he was glued to his stool and his underwear filled with flesh eating ants. Their debut LP, “Juices” is a visceral and viscous testament to their stunning heartfelt brutality, a document of a decade of hardship, the last gasp from the last true vagabonds of American music. Put it on your stereo and it will drip down your walls. Listen to it alone and it will feel like you have been flattened by a train and reabsorbed into the earth.
3. Pass Kontrol

Pass Kontrol is an art collective living and working in the vibrant arts community in Bushwick in Brooklyn, New York. They are interested in taking an innovative and creative approach to playing music with a focus on collaborative art and connecting with their community through their music, films, and shows. Pass Kontrol have also made several short films including “The 21st Arrondissement Of Paris: Bushwick”, which can be found on their MySpace page as well as YouTube. And unsurprisingly, their new play “New Hope City” isn’t the band’s first crack at the stage. They have written, produced and starred in two plays prior to “New Hope City,” “Radiohour Mit Pass Kontrol” and “The Outskirts Show.”
4. Des Roar

New York via California’s sonic bobby-socks rockers, Des Roar, have been become an anchor throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, headlining with a host of New York’s brightest, including Two Tears, Dead Sparrows and Doppelganger. With their mix of surf rock and dance hooks, narratives and noise, they manage to incorporate Brooklyn’s electro leanings into the vibrations of a West Coast garage band, keeping it raw and seamless. With their trash happy performances, the ruckus continued, with an opportunity to go into the studio with producer/musician Graham Finn (Dead Sparrows, The Glass, Dave Gahan) to work on their debut album, “Mad Things” which will be released this Spring.
5. The Jim Jones Revue

UK’s The Jim Jones Revue make their keenly anticipated North American live debut at this year’s SXSW. The JJR count Jack White, Mick Jones and Chris Robinson among their fans. Quite impressive. The Jim Jones Revue kicked off 2010 with a ringing endorsement from Mojo magazine, who tipped the JJR as one of their hot acts for 2010. They opened up for Dead Weather (at the personal invitation of Jack White, after super-fan BBC DJ Steve Lamacq’s on-air appeal for him to check out the band was heeded). In each instance they’ve left audiences, listeners and the occasional sound engineer in a state of shock and awe and have more than lived up to their reputation as Europe’s wildest and hardest rocking band.
