MOVIE MINUTE: THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a fantasy-adventure film based on a set of books with the same name. The movie follows a family as they start to discover a new magical fairy world after their move to an old house. Freddie Highmore and Sarah Bolger star as the three children in the film, with Freddie playing a set of identical twins. The two filled us in on the logistics of making Freddie into two different brothers. "(Freddie) I mean lots of the time they had sort of doubles and various, like a big gang of them (Sarah) Yeah, there was like eight of the like costumes running around the place pretty funny." Mary-Louise Parker plays the mom in the film and she told us why she joined the movie. "The characters are really finely drawn, it's an interesting dynamic between the characters. It's so random and specific and great." The Spiderwick Chronicles hits theatres tomorrow.
GEORGE CLOONEY TALKS LEGAL THRILLERS. George Clooney's film Michael Clayton is nominated for seven Academy Awards including, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture, plus Clooney, Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton are all up for acting awards. We caught up with George and he told us why legal thrillers seem to be successful. "I think people have always liked... sort of legal thrillers. We like 'Perry Mason' and we always like the TV shows. I think they are fun and easy drama in a way because there's always something... there's a beginning, middle and end to them and there's a natural drama to trials that sort of plays into films. I think that's probably it and there's always I think characters like this that are very flawed are more interesting for actors to play." HILTONS: LIKE SISTER, LIKE BROTHER. Barron Hilton is following in his big sister's footsteps. Like Paris, the male Hilton has now been busted for a DUI. According to TMZ, the 18-year-old was arrested yesterday at 8:30 AM at a 76 gas station. Barron apparently hit an employee at the establishment with his car. He had a .14 blood alcohol reading; .08 is the legal limit for individuals over the age of 21. Sources tell the celeb site that the youngster snuck out of his home and his parents did not know where he went. His father, Rick Hilton, stated, "I haven't been contacted yet by either my son or the police. If what I have heard is true, it is very disturbing and I will have a lot to say - but it will be to my son, not the media." Perez Hilton posted a quote from Paris on his Web site, in which the heiress asserted that she's sad for her brother and that she's there to lend her support.
PARIS HILTON'S BIRTHDAY PLANS. Paris Hilton will turn 27-years-old on Sunday. She will, of course, be celebrating in grand style with many parties. She told us all about her big b-day plans. "I'll be in Las Vegas for like eight days because it's Magic and I'm going to be rehearsing, I'm doing the Pussycat Dolls... performing with them and I am gonna have a huge party at Pure and LAX... all in Vegas and then I am going do a party in L-A at Area and a couple other parties around New York and everywhere." If you are not invited to her parties, you can see Hilton on the big screen in her new romantic comedy The Hottie and the Nottie, which is in theaters now.
WILLIAMS BACK IN NYC. After attending the funeral of her ex-fiancé, Heath Ledger, in Australia, Michelle Williams returned to her home in New York City.People reports she was spotted shooting a scene for the movieMammoth in the SoHo area of the city on Monday.
PHILLIPPE'S DARK, SAD PLACE. Ryan Phillippe recently talked toW magazine about his split with ex-wife Reese Witherspoon. He described the end of his seven-year marriage as being one of the"the darkest, saddest place I had ever been." It reportedly took him four to five months just to get out of bed during a period he revealed was the worst time of his life. He claims he is doing much better these days and is less and less sad about it every day.
SI SWIMSUIT MODEL REVEALED. California native Marisa Miller told David Letterman Tuesday night that she would be the nextSports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover model. That will also mark Miller's seventh appearance inSI's popular annual edition.
POP RAGS BEAT TRENDS. Despite the continued decline in newspaper sales, the sales of magazines stayed the same in 2007. According to the New York Times, consumers bought more celebrity rags likeUS Weekly during the second half of the year, while fewer people went to read women's magazine. Meanwhile, food magazines were popular with sales of Rachael Ray'sEvery Daywith Rachael Ray jumping 67 percent. News magazines likeNewsweek remained the same, butTime saw a drastic drop last year because of a change in the publication's marketing strategy.
PASSION SCRIPT WRITER SUES GIBSON. The scriptwriter ofThe Passion of theChrist is suing Mel Gibson. Writer Benedict Fitzgerald claims Gibson told him the film would cost around five to seven-million dollars to make, so Fitzgerald took less money to write a script comparable with the movie's budget. In reality, the final budget was around 25 to 50 million. Fitzgerald maintains that he also refused extra cash when the movie became a box office hit. The BBC reports that Fitzgerald is suing for fraud, breach of contract, unjust enrichment and is seeking unspecified damages.
SHREK HITS THE GREAT WHITE WAY. Though the role of "Shrek" has yet to be cast, theBroadway show based on the hit animated series will open in December. TheAssociated Press reports the roles of the princess and villain have already been chosen for the musical. Previews begin in November with an official opening date scheduled for December 14th.
TOLKIEN ESTATE SUES MOVIE COMPANY. The estate and publishing company of the late J.R.R. Tolkien has filed a lawsuit against the movie company responsible for the Lord of the Rings trilogy films. The trust for the author claims that New Line Cinema agreed to pay them 7.5 percent of total gross revenues for the films, not just from box office sales, but from DVD, games and merchandise. According to the Associated Press, they reportedly have only received a little less than 63-thousand dollars. A spokesperson for the movie company would not comment.
ALLEGED VICTIM DROPS CONNOLLY MATTER. A man who claims Entourage star Kevin Connolly attacked him at an L-A nightclub is now dropping the matter. According to TMZ.com, Phillip Roby maintains Connolly jumped over a table and hit him in the head. While Roby had filed a police report, he has since pulled it and told authorities to drop the matter. Witnesses claim Roby was the one being aggressive and one witness even claims Connolly never even touched him.
MARIAH CAREY CHANGES TO MC². Despite previous reports that Mariah Carey's upcoming album would be titled That Chick, the R&B diva has since changed the title to MC². In addition to the new title, Carey has officially released her first single off the album, "Touch My Body." According to a statement Tuesday, Brett Ratner will be directing the video. MC², which features production by Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp, will.i.am and Bryan Michael Cox, among others, hits stores April 15th.
AMY WINEHOUSE'S MOM SAYS DAUGHTER IS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY. Janis Winehouse, mother of GRAMMY winner Amy Winehouse, tells GMTV that her daughter's performance at the show on Sunday is a sign of her getting better. The elder Winehouse asserted, "Well, it's Amy coming back, she's definitely on the way back. As you saw, she looks good and it's a case of she's on the road -and that's what it's about -she's on the road to recovery." Amy's Back to Black album won her five GRAMMY Awards.
DANCING WITH THE KIDS.MTV News reports that Britney Spears, wearing red boots and fishnet stockings, taught a dance class of young kids Monday night in L-A. The hour-long session had Britney showing the six children, aged four to seven, some of her signature moves. She had them free-style and taught them moves using some old Madonna hits from the '80s. Spears also utilized age-appropriate games for the group of kids, who were shocked when they saw their substitute teacher walk in. She was scheduled to teach another class last night.
AMERICAN IDOL RESULTS SHOW TO EXTEND TO AN HOUR. American Idol will expand its weekly results shows to one hour beginning Wednesday, March 12th at 9 PM Eastern on FOX. During the results shows, America's votes will be announced and the contestant with the lowest number will be eliminated from the competition. The remaining safe finalists will perform live on the Idol stage the following Tuesday. As previously announced, Idol Gives Back will air Wednesday, April 9th at 8 PM Eastern and the results show will be pushed back to Thursday, April 10th at 9 PM Eastern on FOX. One contestant will be sent home and the remaining top five contestants will continue on to perform the following week.
FERGIE IS A SPELLING BEE CHAMPION... The latest celeb to make a cameo on FunnyOrDie.com happens to be none other than Fergie. In the spoof, the singer is a spelling bee contestant and every word she is given ends with the letters "ous," lampooning her song "Glamorous." ...AND SHE IN NOT PREGNANT. The New York Post's Page Six gossip column has a juicy nugget. The paper is reporting that Fergie and her fiancé, actor Josh Duhamel, are pushing up their nuptials because the singer is pregnant. An insider at Clive Davis' pre-GRAMMY party said the Black Eyed Pea procured a wedding dress in New York during Fashion Week and noted that Fergie only drank water at the bash. But a rep for Fergie tells Access Hollywood that, "She is NOT pregnant."
GRAMMY AWARDS DO NOT DELIVER BIG RATINGS. While the gala event dominated Sunday evening television, the 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards did not deliver big ratings. According to The Los Angeles Times, the over three-hour long telecast averaged 17.5-million viewers, a 12-percent decline from last year's show. Of course, the numbers are higher than the 2006 ceremony, which went up against an episode of American Idol. This year, the GRAMMY Awards faced off against repeats of Family Guy and Brothers & Sisters, amongst other programming.
LAWYERS WANT NEW MONEY MAN FOR BRITNEY. The lawyers for Britney Spears' parents, who convinced a court to put the singer's assets into a conservatorship, now want a new conservator. TMZ.com reports lawyers believe Howard Grossman violated the court's order by allowing Spears access to a credit card to finance her stay at the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel and having one of her cars delivered to the hotel, where she went after leaving UCLA Medical Center. The conservator said he was "trying to build Britney's trust in him." Attorneys for the conservatorship are also furious that Grossman won't give them a string of e-mails sent to him by Sam Lufti, Spears unofficial "manager," in which he makes several demands for money.
MALAWI OFFICIAL BACKS MADONNA. It may be hard to believe, but Madonna has not officially adopted the Malawian child, David Banda. The Material Girl must still travel to the African nation in April for a final hearing. According to the New York Daily News, the singer has some support in the country. Malawi's information minister, Patricia Kaliati, said, "This country owes her so much. Very few famous people would take their time off to rally other celebrities to raise money for a poor country like Malawi." The two-year-old has been living with Madonna in London.
NATASHA BEDINGFIELD TO DO U-S SPRING TOUR. Natasha Bedingfield is in full promoting mode for her recently released album Pocket Full of Sunshine. In the spring, the British singer gets to head out on the road for the U-S leg of her tour. "I am going to do a tour in April and May all over the States. At the moment, I don't know who the other act is but it's going to be, it's my first tour, so it's going to be wonderful." PAT MONAHAN ON HIS NEW SINGLE. Pat Monahan has taken a little bit of time off from the road of late since the release of his debut solo album, Last of Seven.We caught up with Monahan right before the GRAMMYs and he told us that he hasn't been resting on his laurels. "I have a new single called 'Two Ways to Say Goodbye.' I'm hoping to see the video I just shot for it in Brooklyn later on tonight." Monahan filmed the video this past weekend and he told us the clip is a little different than his last few videos because he is not the star of it. He told us that the meat of the acting goes to a man and a woman, who play a couple on the outs and he is featured only for performance shots.
MILEY CYRUS NEEDS TO WEAR THAT BELT. Miley Cyrus and her "Hannah Montana" character are certainly good role models for young girls, but the New York Daily News has discovered one area where children should not emulate the singer. In her new 3-D movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, Miley is seen in the back of a Range Rover with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, and neither father nor daughter is wearing a seat belt. So, remember, be sure to wear your safety belt. The Consumer Reports Safety Blog noted Monday that in 55 percent of passenger vehicle fatalities in 2006, the occupants were not wearing seat belts.
RICK ROSS TALKS "THE BOSS." Rick Ross recently released his sophomore album, Trilla. And now he's released a second single, "The Boss," and shot a video for it. Which he told us all about. "We shot it in the Trump World Center, like on the 80th floor. It's just that grind man! I summarized it up in the record, just them ten year's of me struggling to get to this point. And now we're on top of the game." Ross will be headed to the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia March 7th with Trey Songz, Plies, Shawty Lo, Webbie, Lil Boosie and Flo Ridaon The Southern Hustlin' Tour.
JAY-Z AND LEBRON JAMES TO HOLD KING SIZE DINNER. This Saturday Jay-Z and LeBron James will take over the New Orleans' Generation Hall to co-host a private dinner that will consist of a veritable who's who in the entertainment and sports industries, including many of the CEOs and CMOs from Fortune 500 companies who will be in town for the NBA All-Star Weekend. Following the exclusive dinner, guests will be joined at the Two Kings after-party of the same location, featuring DJ Clark Kent and Mick Boogie on the wheels of steel.
GET YOUR SLASH GUITAR. Slash has become a guitar icon over the last 20 years and naturally, it's time to release an axe in his honor. On April 1st, Gibson will release three limited edition models of Slash's Les Paul signature guitar. Slash and his bandmates in Velvet Revolver plan on entering the studio in April to begin work on a new album.
YOKO ONO SUES LENNON. For eight years, Lennon Murphy has been performing under the name Lennon, her legal first name. She was named after Beatle John Lennon and in 2003, went so far as to register her stage name as a trademark. She consulted Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, about using it even though she didn't need to. Yet, according to TMZ.com, Ono is now suing Murphy, claiming the singer "fraudulently" registered the name as a trademark, asserting that she is tarnishing Lennon's name. Murphy, however, has another Lennon on her side. John's son, Julian, posted a statement from the singer on his MySpace page and above it, wrote, "She has my full support."
MAN WHO INSPIRED ELVIS DIES. While the name Freddie Bell might not mean too much to the average music fan, it meant a lot to Elvis Presley. In fact, it was Bell who inspired The King to cover "Hound Dog." However, this past weekend, the forerunner in 1950's rock died of complications from cancer. According to the Associated Press, Bell was performing at the Sands casino in Las Vegas while Presley was just an opening act across the street. But when Elvis caught Bell's tunes and even some of his dance moves, he was inspired. In the '50s, Bell was considered one of the great lounge acts of the time and was close with all the big names, including Frank Sinatra. He even appeared in some films, like 1956's Rock Around the Clock. Bell was 76.
NELLY TO HOST FASHION SHOW. Nelly and actress Lauren London have been tapped to host the BET network's upcoming fashion showcase, Rip the Runway, on Thursday, February 21st at New York's Manhattan Center. According to XXL magazine, this year's show is being executive produced by Sean "Diddy" Combs and will feature collections from the mogul's own Sean John line, Nelly's Apple Bottom line and Billionaire Boys Club by Pharrell. Rip The Runway combines live musical performances with a traditional runway style fashion show. And Snoop Dogg has been announced as one of the night's performers. The show will air on BET on Tuesday, March 2nd at 9:00 PM Eastern.
KEITH SWEAT COMING TO MOBILE PHONES. Keith Sweat is back with a brand-new CD titled Just Me. The first single, "Suga Suga Suga," will be available as a ringtone on February 12th by searching "Sweat" on all mobile carriers. The digital single will also be available the same day at all digital service providers. Just Me is set for release on May 6th.
BUBBA SPARXXX IS BACK. Vibe reports Bubba Sparxxx is back with a label deal with KOCH Records and a fourth album on the way. Though the details of Sparxxx KOCH deal are unverified, Sparxxx' label New South Entertainment has also been signed to KOCH. The rapper is currently in the studio working on material for the release of a mixtape and a full-length album due out this summer.
GURU GIVES LOVE TO CHAKA AND HERBIE. Collaborating with both GRAMMY award winning artist Chaka Kahn and Herbie Hancock in the past, Guru feels their recognition is long over due. "Big 'ups' to Chaka Khan and Herbie Hancock! It's funny we was just speaking the other day about Herbie, that all the thing he's done in the jazz community all these years. Like most jazz artists had to tour Europe extensively, and so forth and get so much love there before finally he's being recognized here. So, big 'ups' to him! And of course, Chaka, that's so inspirational 'cause, you know, she's had classic albums throughout her career and that she came back through with another classic album." The Gangstarr member is also keeping up with the jazz of his Jazzmatazz series. On Tuesday he alongside super producer Solar will release their new mixtape, Guru's Jazzmatazz: The Time Bomb (Back To The Future Mixtape) hosted by DJ Doo Wop.
RON ISLEY HAS TO STAY IN JAIL. An appeals court has upheld the 37-month federal prison sentence for tax evasion for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Ronald Isley. According to The Associated Press, the three-judge panel rejected the 66-year-old singer's argument that his sentence was unreasonable due to his age, poor health and lack of proof that the federal prison system can provide him adequate health care. The court ruled that the trial judge was correct in sentencing the "Between The Sheets" singer for his "pathological" tax evasion. Isley was sentenced in 2006 after being convicted of five counts of tax evasion and one count of willful failure to file a tax return. He suffered a minor stroke in 2004, but continued performing afterwards. He is currently in prison at the Terre Haute Federal Corrections Institution in Indiana, with release scheduled for April 2010.
BUCKCHERRY HAVE ROCKIN NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS. Buckcherry are currently wrapping up a two year tour of their platinum-selling album 15, but the guys have already begun work on its follow-up. What's it gonna sound like? Guitarist Keith Nelson fills us in. "We're a Rock N Roll band it's always going to be a Rock N Roll record. But I think we're heavier in spots where there's some really great ballads that we got. I think if you liked the last record you'll love the new one." THOM YORKE DONATES ITEM FOR ROGUE WAVE BENEFIT. Fans of Rogue Wave know that their bassist Evan Farrell died late last year in a fire at an apartment in Oakland, California. According to Pitchfork, some big names are donating items for a benefit auction that is being held to help his wife and two kids that he left behind. Among the items on the eBay auction are: a signed copy of Thom Yorke's Eraser album, a printer's proof for The New Pornographers' Challengers bearing the signature of Mr. A.C. Newman, a signed copy of Joan of Arc's Live in Chicago, 1999 and more. All proceeds once again go to Evan Farrell's family.
IS AXL ROSE A RECLUSE? A new tell-all book about Axl Rose is on shelves and in it, the author reveals that Rose has become a "virtual recluse" in his Malibu mansion for the past 15 years. In his book, W.A.R. - The Unauthorized Biography of William Axl Rose, Mick Wall writes, "These days he is regarded by some as almost a Howard Hughes figure, the bearded, sun-baked, wild-eyed survivor." In the tome, Wall quotes the rocker's former Guns N' Roses bandmate Slash, who stated, "Everybody keeps going on about reunion, but the truth is, [Axl] doesn't want to see me any more than I want to see him." Rose is rumored to be shopping around Chinese Democracy, the comeback album he's been working on for the past 15 years.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS REUNITE FOR ROCK ON THE RANGE.It's been confirmed that the Stone Temple Pilots will play their first reunion show at the Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, Ohio on May 17th and 18th. Other bands on the bill include Kid Rock, Disturbed, 3 Doors Down, Staind, Papa Roach, Seether, Flyleaf, Finger Eleven and more. This is STP's first show in over seven years. Tickets go on sale on February 23rd.
GET YOUR FILTER IN MAY. According to MTV News, Filter will release a new album in May. The record is titled Anthems for the Damned and singer Richard Patrick feels confident about the offering, saying, "I knew I'd have to return with the goods, and I'm absolutely convinced that that's what I have with this record."
COLD WAR BASSIST RELEASES A BOOK. Cold War Kids bassist Matt Maust appears to be multi-talented. MTV News reports that he is also a writer and has a book on the way. What It Is: What It Is was written by Maust and Paul G. Maziar and it is described as a "new urban-centric tome that also includes photo collages." It's due in stores in May.
AMY LEE IS HARPING ON NEW MUSIC. Evanescene frontwoman Amy Lee says their follow-up to their 2007 album The Open Door is a way off, but she says she's still expanding her musical horizons. "Now I'm playing the harp, learning new instruments and just kind of starting from scratch to get a new perspective at home. So we'll see." For more news on Evanescence check out Evanescene.com.
P.O.D. WANNA PLAY. P.O.D. are back this year with a new album and a tour in support of it. Guitarist Marcos Curiel says they will be playing small clubs and he told us why. "I think we just want to make the right decision and not play the same old shows and kind of burn them out. Obviously if there's chances to go over seas and jump on some big tours we'll do that to. But if we have to pack out the little clubs we want to do that to. We just want to play." When Angels and Serpents Dance is the name of the new P.O.D. album and its out on April 8th.
SLAYER MAN TALKS ABOUT GRAMMY WIN. Slayer took home the GRAMMY for Best Metal Performance this past weekend and frontman Tom Araya spoke about the win. According to Blabbermouth.net, Araya exclaimed backstage, "This is awesome. I guess we're part of the industry now, above ground. None of those tunnel diggings anymore." Araya added, "We owe a lot of our success to our fans. The industry is great, but the fans are the ones that take the time to look you up to see what you're doing, wait for the record to come out and buy it." The band was honored for their track, "The Final Six," off Christ Illusion.
